The Volunteers of America Colorado (VOAC) will offer free health services and health education to homeless veterans in Denver starting May 1 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and continuing for one day a week for six weeks at Volunteers of America’s Bill Daniels Veteran Services Center. The services are made possible through a new Veteran Preventive Care Program arranged by the Cigna Community Ambassador Fellowship program in coordination with VOAC and the University of Colorado School of Nursing.

New free services for veterans include:
  • Access to health care screenings, first aid, health education, skin assessment and foot care
  • A chance for veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to work with a nurse to focus on their health
The new Veteran Preventive Health Care Program is a partnership among the Volunteers of America Colorado, Cigna’s Community Ambassador Fellowship program, and Mary Volenec MSN, RN, PCCN-K, a nurse and DNP/MPH dual degree student with the University of Colorado School of Nursing and the Colorado School of Public Health. This program brings these partners together for the shared purpose of improving access to care for the veterans served by the Volunteers of America.

Cigna has created a Community Ambassador Fellowship providing 1-3 months of paid leave and up to $20,000 toward selected community service projects. Cigna employee and Denver resident Jonathan Powell is one of the nine program participants in 2018. He applied for this grant on behalf of the Volunteers of America – Colorado Branch because he knew there was a gap in the health care access among homeless and other struggling veterans.

Mary Volenec RN is a dual degree doctoral student working with the University of Colorado School of Nursing and the Colorado School of Public Health.
