Celebrate Mother’s Day with Mozart. Join the First United Methodist Church of Boulder, Colorado for a very special musical event on Sunday, May 13. During the 10:30 a.m. worship service, the Chancel Choir and Friends with orchestra, under the baton of the Director of Music, Gerald Holbrook, will present W. A. Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, K. 339, Solemn Vespers. This performance is free and open to everyone.
Vespers is the seventh of eight Christian prayer services that make up the Hours of the Divine Office, established at the end of the 6th century under the influence of Pope Gregory the Great (d. 604). These services came from the ancient Jewish tradition of praying at midnight, as well as at the third, sixth, and ninth hours; the practice was observed by Jesus’s Apostles and eventually the prayers were adapted to fit the developing Christian theology.
The evening service, Vespers, is derived from the Jewish blessing of lights at the close of the Sabbath feast (the Lucernarium). Mozart’s setting is limited to the five Psalms and the Magnificat (“Song of Mary”), omitting the smaller sections of the Vespers structure. In these six movements, Mozart uses choir and solo quartet in four of the movements, choir only in one movement, and solo soprano with choir in the beautiful and well-known “Laudate Dominum” movement.
There is no admittance fee, and all are welcome; just join the church for the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday, May 13. Please invite your friends and family.
