Senior Director of Finance - UMC Board of Global Ministries, Atlanta, Georgia

The Senior Director of Finance will join a nonprofit corporate organization with finance opportunities unlike many available today. The General Board of Global Ministries is the largest agency of The United Methodist Church. It is moving its U.S. headquarters to Atlanta after nearly 200 years in New York City.  Given its worldwide scope, which includes missionaries and other personnel, all focusing on some of the world's major social and global health challenges, plus an international humanitarian aid organization providing relief from hunger and disasters, known as UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), Global Ministries offers an exciting opportunity for a senior finance professional.


Manage, direct and implement performance excellence strategies and objectives to ensure the achievement of Global Ministries goals in the areas of financial services. Responsible for the company's financial plans and policies, accounting practices, the maintenance of fiscal records, safeguarding of assets, the preparation of financial reports and relating to various constituencies on financial matters. 



  • Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy.

  • Progressive experience in financial analysis, management reporting, accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and project management. 

  • Proven ability to assist in the development of systems to define performance benchmarks, reduce costs, and improve financial performance. 

  • Demonstrated performance in partnering finance with programs to achieve the organizations goals.

  • Comfortable working within a functional and global line of business matrixes organization. 

  • Strong leadership ability, with the capacity to balance empathy with determination, staunchly defending a strategic direction while considering the position of others. 

  • Experience working “hands on” and comfortable with rapid change, quick decisions and uncertainty. 

  • An “in-the-trenches”, tactile Finance executive who is willing to immerse him or herself in the work. 

  • Demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others. 

  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities. 

  • Problem analysis and resolution at both a strategic and functional level. 

  • Detail-oriented executive who brings analytical traits to the organization and operates within a framework that utilizes well-defined metrics, scorecards and KPI’s.



  • Participates in short/long range planning.
  • Responsible for the finances of Global Ministries including all entities and all related functions and departments.
  • Responsible for the preparation and monitoring of the annual Global Ministries’ budget.
  • Responsible for all financial reporting to the general church and other entities.
  • Manage the pension and health benefit plans along with the administering entities.
  • Develop management talent within financial areas to achieve performance targets.
  • Oversight of the endowment funds of Global Ministries including setting policy.
  • Responsible for providing oversight of the investments of the organization in collaboration with the investment managers.
  • Responsible for the financial systems being used including implementation of ongoing new systems.
  • Communicate/present to the board of director’s on Global Ministries’ financial performance as required.
  • Establish, implement and revise policies and procedures related to financial operations.
  • Report financial performance on the organization and furnish internal budgetary reports to peer executives.
  • Oversee banking relationships.
  • Responsibility for timely and accurate completion of Global Ministries’ Annual Financial Statement audit, the A-133 audit, the 403(b) plan audit;  government and other grants.
  • Responsible for communicating financial data to various constituents including non-financial persons.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor Degree in Accounting or equivalent ideally with an MBA/CPA or related degree.

  • Ten years management experience, preferably in global non-profit environment.

  • CPA or CMA licensing desired.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to engage in international travel including in the developing world.

  • Minimum of five years of experience in senior level financial management reporting to CEO/CFO.

  • Minimum of seven years supervisory experience of senior level managers in finance and administration.

  • Familiarity with multiple accounting standards including: Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP); International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). 

  • Familiarity with international monetary and banking complexities.

  • Experience in managing a significant investment portfolio using multiple investment instruments.

  • Experience in managing and working with pension and health benefit plans.

  • Familiarity with multiple financial systems, preferably Great Plains.

  • Minimum of ten years of experience in developing and managing multiple budgets in an international environment.

  • Experience working directly and reporting to a Board of Directors and Board Committees.

  • Experience working and promoting a team atmosphere within a diverse work environment.

  • United Methodist affiliation and knowledge necessary.

  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to translate financial concepts and information-and to effectively collaborate with-programmatic persons and others who do not necessarily have financial backgrounds.

  • Working knowledge of endowments.
