The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) began a program to establish regional "hubs.” A regional hub serves a particular area as a collection and distribution center for supplies and kits used by UMCOR in their relief efforts. Volunteers also serve as ambassadors for UMCOR in the region, providing training and facilitating kit building events. The United Methodist Church of Johnstown is proud to announce it is now serving as one of these hubs, serving the Peaks and Plains District and available for all churches along the Front Range.

Although the UMCOR hub team at The United Methodist Church of Johnstown had planned to be fully operational by mid-October, we were given a kick-start due to the extraordinary need arising from hurricanes in Texas, Louisiana and Florida, as well as the fire emergencies in the west. On Sunday, Sept. 10, the UMC of Johnstown hub sponsored its first kit-building event. Though somewhat limited in scope, members of four congregations came together to produce 28 cleanup buckets and 140 hygiene kits, which will be shipped to the UMCOR West Depot in Salt Lake City within a few days. The event exemplified the fellowship and camaraderie that mission trips to the UMCOR Depot in Salt Lake City produce; while giving local churches the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to relief efforts sponsored by UMCOR.

The UMC of Johnstown hub will continue to move forward with plans for a permanent storage facility, training within our region, and sponsoring more events at the Hub. We are open for business, and one immediate advantage of the hub for churches in the Peaks and Plains District and along the Front Range is that you can bring or ship items to the hub in Johnstown, and we will manage getting them to UMCOR, allowing churches to spend a little more on items by spending a little less on shipping. When our permanent storage facility is completed, hopefully by mid-October, look for an invitation to a grand opening event when we hope to create more cleanup kits, hygiene kits, or whatever is needed by UMCOR.
