Denver Urban Matters pursues merger with St. Francis Center

July 26, 2017
Editor's note: The following is from an email letter sent July 26 from Denver Urban Matters Executive Director Tammy Mulligan.

There are major changes coming to Denver Urban Matters! The DenUM Board of Directors is excited to announce that we have decided to pursue a merger with St. Francis Center. After many discussions about the future of our organization and how best to move forth our mission, it became inherently clear that we needed to explore our options.

As many of you may know our social enterprise team began looking into opportunities to open a grocery store. Once we determined that was no longer a viable option we began investigating opportunities to provide permanent, affordable, housing to our low-income community in our current building.  For those we serve, housing has become the greatest unmet need in our community. Since then, we have met with community partners, realtors, investors, and committed stakeholders to best understand how to make affordable housing happen.

Our partnership with the St. Francis Center, along with our building, will facilitate the development of permanent housing along the Colfax corridor and contribute to the overall need to create accessible and affordable housing options for the most vulnerable in our community.

This transition both benefits those we serve and honors the legacy of DenUM's founding – to meet the needs of our low-income community and address long-term self-sufficiency by creating more permanent, affordable housing within Denver. While there is still much to be decided about the outcome of this partnership, we do know that beginning September 1, most client-facing services will transition to St. Francis Center and our food pantry resources will move to Aurora Interfaith Community Services. A skeleton crew will remain on-board through the end of the year to close out all remaining business.

DenUM is committed to transparency throughout the transition process. This decision was not one easily come to and we appreciate your many years of support. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Tammy Mulligan
