Job Description

Job Title: Director of Development
Type of Job: Full-Time, Exempt


SUMMARY

The Director of Development is the chief fundraising strategist for the Church, working with the pastoral staff to provide vision, leadership, direction, and coordination for all stewardship and fundraising initiatives. The fundraising efforts will include annual operating campaigns, capital campaigns, special fundraising appeals, and coordinated efforts to secure major gifts and testamentary gifts.
 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Stewardship Education: as a staff liaison to the Stewardship Committee, work closely with the Pastors, Stewardship Committee, and key laity and employees to develop and implement an annual strategic vision for stewardship education to raise the giving levels of all donors
  • Comprehensive strategic vision for annual stewardship and capital campaigns: work closely with Pastors, key staff, and appropriate committees to design and implement church-wide operating campaigns (once per year) and capital campaigns (once per every three years)
  • Permanent Endowment Fund: work closely with Legacy Committee to manage/cultivate current and future legacy benefactors through one-on-one visits and special events
  • Developing and Managing Relationships with Laity: Research prospects and establish priorities for solicitation; develop deep relationships with members and constituents of St. Andrew to inform and inspire current and potential contributors
  • Collaboration with Sr. Pastor and Executive Pastor: establish fundraising goals and project timelines for campaigns; create a fundraising calendar that integrates with the master church calendar; connect pastors with potential donors.
  • Administration: track, analyze, and report data on all of St. Andrew’s fundraising efforts, donors, and prospects; manage and oversee the use of fund raising software; regularly perform needs/trend analysis and make projections for future giving; ensure complete security and confidentiality of all donor information
  • Leadership Development: Recruit, train, manage, supervise and acknowledge volunteers to assist with fundraising projects and campaigns
  • Commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards
  • Ability to attend off-site meetings as needed
 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Five to ten years of demonstrated development experience, with a record of success in fundraising including the demonstrated ability to create fundraising plans, set and meet goals, and solicit and close major gifts from individuals
  • Experience with capital campaigns and planned giving
 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • High level of technical proficiency with all computer tools, including social media; experience with fundraising database software is a plus; and a working knowledge of internal and external communication technology; willingness to learn new software
  • Ability to manage complex organizational detail
  • Ability to work independently and be flexible in a changing environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated management skills, preferably in a church or non-profit organization
  • Ability to work with people of faith and with people at all economic levels
  • Ability to work on a team
  • Knowledge of AFP ethical and professional standards
  • Knowledge of the United Methodist Church and familiarity with a progressive faith community is preferred
  • CFRE certification preferred
 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to operate vehicle safely
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Acceptable driving record
  • Reliable and safe personal vehicle
 

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS

Standard office hours as well as some evening and weekend work
 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s Degree or higher education
 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to work in a dynamic office environment as part of a team under often fast-changing conditions

 

COMPENSATION

Salary range is dependent on experience. In addition to salary, we offer medical and dental insurance.
