Ethics Education Training set for June 18

The RMC Ethical Education Task Force is pleased to announce that "Sexual Ethics: Keeping Congregations Safe" will be offered on Wednesday, June 18 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Marriott DTC Hotel, 4900 South Syracuse, where Annual Conference Session will begin that evening. This ethics training session will fulfill the requirement for persons in ministry as per Petition AC 11 (2006) to attend once every four years. The course is presented by Dr. Karen A. McClintock, a psychologist, author and congregational consultant. She is a clergy member of the California-Nevada Annual Conference where she served as parish pastor for nearly two decades. Her new book, Healthy Disclosure in Congregations (Alban 2008) explores professional ethics, sexual boundaries, secrets in congregations, and sexual abuse prevention. She has presented abuse prevention and leadership workshops nationally for the past five years. She has also authored Preventing Sexual Abuse in Congregations (Alban) and Sexual Shame: An Urgent Call to Healing (Fortress Press). She teaches part-time at the Northwest House of Theological Studies, Pacific School of Religion, and Southern Oregon University.

The books listed in the biography material above may be purchased at Cokesbury or the publishers listed above. The Task Force recommends the reading of Preventing Sexual Abuse in Congregations prior to the training. Prior registration is required. A fee of $12 is required to pay the cost of materials provided to each attendee. You may register on line at ethicseducation.net. Space is limited, early registration is suggested. Treasurer Reports Second Month of Church Tithe Results

Here is an update of your efforts at the local level in administering the Tithing program. On the RMCUMC.org web (under Church Resources/Finance or CF&A), you will find the detailed Tithing report, by church, along with a graph depicting our conference revenue position. In summary, the March Tithing for February 2008 Adjusted Gross Income resulted in an overall downward trend from February 2007 of $ 43,745. On a year to date basis through February for the comparative two-month period, the shortfall is $ 28,751. We have received 95.5% of last year to date apportionment level giving. These figures do not include the "Second Mile" Giving; which is intended to cover any shortfalls during the first two years of this Tithing conversion. This amount for the first two months of 2008 is $54,354. Taking into account this component, our year to date increase over 2007 year to date is $ 25,603

A number of churches should be recognized for their efforts in increasing their giving over last year to date: Northglenn, Park Hill, Trinity-Denver, Wheat Ridge, Applewood, Central, Littleton, St. Andrew, Parker, Sunrise, First-Colorado Springs, Brighton, Christ-Ft. Collins, Longs Peak, First-Ft. Collins, First-Greeley, First-Pueblo, First-Durango, First-Montrose, Community-Pagosa Springs, Community-Ogden and Christ SLC. The number of churches reporting no tithing for the first two months dropped from 112 in 2007 to 63 in 2008, a significant improvement in participation.

If you have any questions regarding the Tithing program, please contact Laurie Day, Asst. Treasurer-Donor Services (ext. 162) or Wayne Bettendorf, Conference Treasurer (ext. 151). Link to this on the web: http://rmcumc.org/CR/Finance/. A report for the 3rd month is now available at this link.

Revised Tithe Form Available

A revised Church Tithe Form is now available on the RMC web site. Look at the drop-down menus at the top; it will be found under Resources, Forms. Otherwise, look under Church Resources, Finance. The direct link is: http://rmcumc.org/CR/Finance/index.htm#titheform

  • The people of Ordway, Olney Springs and Arkansas Valley. A joint community memorial service was held Saturday for the two firefighters killed. RMC pastors Jean McPherson and Jeanne Redshaw participated. Terilynn Russ, pastor at La Junta, offered this prayer concern at the RMC Prayer Corner. "Lift up residents of Ordway, Olney Springs and Arkansas Valley affected by the deaths of two firemen killed while fighting the blaze that destroyed and damaged 24 homes and businesses in Ordway. For strength and grace, Pastors Dennis Aleson (Ordway), Jean McPherson (Olney Springs), Jeanne Redshaw (Fowler/Manzanola) and Olga Hard (Rocky Ford) as they continue to minister to those affected and lead funerals and memorial services."
  • Marge Sandlier, a cousin to Lora Payne, pastor at First UMC, Florence, and is like a sister to Lora. Marge was the one who was able to be there with her mother when her mother was dying. Marge has been diagnosed with colon cancer, had one lesion surgically removed and will have another removed through an abdominal incision after she goes through chemo and radiation. Marge is very active at Hanscom Park UMC in Omaha, NE. Expressions of care may be sent to Lora Payne, JLPayne84@hotmail.com.
  • Janna Kershaw, spouse of Ross Kershaw, pastor of First UMC, Golden, whose father, Doyle Mitchell died suddenly on April 13 in Pueblo West. He was 75. Services were April 16 at Sonrise UMC in Pueblo West. Expressions of care may be sent to Janna at janna.kershaw@comcast.net. Doyle was a long-time resident of Canon City and was also a grandfather to Joel Kershaw, associate pastor of First UMC in Fort Collins.

Ken writes, "Thank you all so much for the faithful prayers, love and support you have shown to me and to my family throughout the days of mom's passing and dad's illness. Though deeply sad, it is with underlying joy and peace in my heart and those of my dear sisters that we let you know that [on the morning of April 9], dad triumphantly took his last earthly breath and joined mom in the presence of the Lord." FUMC's Wee Care Preschool and Childcare Center was able to remain open, refilling about 40 gallon jugs each day for hand washing and food preparation, plus a large supply of bottled water for the children to drink. The long-term impact of this will be devastating to an already depressed economy. We invite you to visit our restaurants, motels and other businesses.
