Great Day of Singing Worship Service Offered
A GREAT DAY OF SINGING worship service is available on the United
Methodist General Board of Discipleship worship and music website
(www.umcworship.org)
as a free download, including notes on the service and hymns. It
is an ideal service to celebrate a musical emphasis, or for when
the pastor is out of town.
A GREAT DAY OF SINGING was begun in the 20th century as an annual
Sunday worship service set aside for the celebration of music and
congregational singing. Though less used today than it once was,
it remains an annual event in some churches. It was sometimes combined
with fellowship and a meal and was called All-Day-Singing-and-Supper-on-the-Grounds,
often with the singing and eating taking place outdoors or near
a river.
Methodists have always been a singing people. The world has never
seen a greater hymn writer than Charles Wesley, nor a more important
and influential hymnal editor than John Wesley. This service seeks
to revive interest in the GREAT DAY OF SINGING, and it does so
within a context that celebrates the great heritage and tradition
of Methodist song. All of the hymns selected were composed by Methodist
writers or have a strong historical Methodist connection. The order
of service is also thoroughly United Methodist, taken directly
from An Order of Sunday Worship Using the Basic Pattern, pages
3-5 in The United Methodist Hymnal.

Music Leaders' Contact Information Needed
Building on some grassroots initiative, the Rocky Mountain Conference
is interested in seeking out the music leaders in our RMC-UMC
churches, whether paid or volunteer, choir/organ or praise band, in
order to build
a sense of community among Conference musicians through events
and communications systems. However, we do not currently have any organized
infrastructure
to contact such people, and so we are asking for your help:
Please
e-mail Kerry Greenhill (kerry@rmcumc.com), our Communications and Events
Intern,
with the name, phone number, e-mail address, and preferred method
of contact for music personnel in your congregation. Such people might
include
choir directors (including children's or youth choir leaders),
praise band leaders, directors of music, handbell choir directors,
and organist/pianists,
among others. Please include the name of your church in the message!
You may also or alternatively wish to direct your staff to this page,
where they can read our
letter and fill out an Interest
Survey (both are MS Word docs).
Thanks for your help, and blessings in your ministries. -- Kerry
