Annual Conference 2004
Report: Friday, June 18
by Kimberly Henrie, Lay Leader, Western Colorado Sub-district
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It has been a delight and honor to attend this annual conference.
There are many new faces and opportunities to visit old friends.
It is a wonder to see the work and praise done by these servants
of Christ to His glory.
For the laity, this day began with a song-filled worship service
led by the United Methodist Women in celebration of 135 years in
mission. We were treated to song, dance and a skit highlighting the
history and purpose of the UMW. During worship, laity offered over
$1300 to the Bridge of Love for Angola.
Following our worship, the Board of Laity lifted up Tommy Gleaton
in honor of his past 8 years serving as our Conference Lay Leader.
Conference Treasurer Dan O'Neill provided an overview of the 2005
budget and led a Q&A session to help clarify things.
In a presentation of General Conference 2004, delegates Brad Laurvick
and Sarah Babb expressed their appreciation of the many young people
participating at the General Conference level. Lay delegate Judy
Hill extended an invitation to all lay people to ask questions of
the delegates to get an accurate picture of General Conference. And
having served 16 years at the GC level, first alternate lay delegate
Peggy Sewell lifted up the theme of this year's General
Conference: "Water Washed, Spirit Born," also the title
of new study materials on baptism that Peggy helped develop in her
years of service.
Bishop Jose Quipungo of Angola, provided the laity address this
morning, stating "We are a family in Jesus Christ's name." Bishop
Quipungo thanked the RMC for its care and support thus far and asked
for our continued prayers, gifts and service as Angola seeks to rebuild
after a war that lasted from 1961-2002. The specific needs lifted
up by the Bishop include Humanitqaian assistance, care for orphans
of the war and training for Angola's people (such as cooking, sewing,
reading, writing and traditional education.) He closed the session
with reference to John 21:15-17, asking the crowd "Peter, do
you love me?" and the laity responded, "Yes, Lord!"
Following lunch we were led in Bible Study by Dr. Zan Holmes, who
has inspired us all with his exuberant teaching and preaching and
his love of Christ.
Many petitions were approved today, including a petition formalizing
the process of electing Conference Lay Leader, a special apportionment
to cover expenses related to Templed Hills retreat center, and the
discontinuance of the Milford Community Church in Milford, Utah.
In all, this annual conference body is filled with the Holy Spirit--in
celebration and serious contemplation as we seek God's will in the
direction of our church. There is much joy here.
Grace and Peace,
Kimberly Henrie
