Three Exciting Ten-Hour Leading and Learning Opportunities – ALL
LAITY INVITED!
“Reclaiming the “E” Word - Building
a Faith-Sharing Congregation”
The task of the church is to make disciples, and the role of
the congregation is primary, for the climate of the congregation
either proclaims Christ or convinces people otherwise. Participants
will consider their own church’s “E” score,
that is, welcoming, including, and making disciples, and consider
a strategy for the congregation as evangelist. There will be
ample opportunity for individual work and group discussion. [Approved
advanced lay speaking course]
Class Leaders: Rev. Claire Drewes and Linda Freund. Rev.Drewes
was ordained as an elder in full connection in the Oregon-Idaho
Conference prior to her transfer to Rocky Mountain Conference
and appointment at Lyons UMC effective July 1, 2008. Linda Freund
is a provisional deacon in the Or-Id Conference, and is completing
her Master of Divinity at Iliff School of Theology, Denver, Colorado.
“Lay Speakers Tell Stories”
Lay speakers will learn what constitutes a good story, discover
their storytelling styles, learn the techniques of effective
storytelling, and practice creating stories from their own
experiences. This course will be a valuable tool for all who
wish to enhance their own verbal ‘word picture’ skills.
Text for this course is Dancing with Words, written by Native
American storyteller, Ray Buckley. [Approved advanced lay speaking
course]
Class Leaders: Rev. Mark L. Heiss and Chuck Keim. Rev. Heiss
is an ordained elder and has served pastorates in Rocky Mountain
Conference since 1984. He was appointed to a two church charge
at Mead UMC and First UMC, Platteville, on July 1, 2008. Chuck
is an active member at Lyons UMC, serves on the Peaks Leadership
Team, and is a local church lay speaker.
“Lay Speaking Ministries – Basic Course”
This required introductory course in lay speaking ministries
focuses on leading, caring, and communicating, and is designed
for those who are called to serve in a speaking role, particularly
during worship. It is a valuable overview to the advanced
courses available. Recommendation of the pastor is required for enrollment
in the basic lay speaking course.
Class Leaders: Rev. Sandy and Rick Stewart. Sandy and Rick are
life-long United Methodists and have been active in Lay Speaking
Ministries since 1995. Sandy is an ordained Deacon, serving beyond
